Ancient Roman architecture – like dome of 14m high and 427m long at the north port of Wakkanai is popular for its unique shape. Plenty of TV drama and CM have been shot here.
Train ferry service was operated between south of Sakhalin, that was under the control of Japanese government at that era, and Wakkanai until the end of WW 2. To prevent ship, train, and passengers from storm or snow, this breakwater dome started to be constructed in 1931, then it completed in 1936.
